Pigmented Lesions-Benign and Malignant

Nevus   Dysplastic nevi 

 

Benign. Characterized by regularly shaped macules or  papules of uniform color.  

 

Irregularly pigmented and shaped nevomelanocytic lesions, may be associated with familial melanoma.

Superficial spreading melanoma   Lentigo maligna melanoma

 

Most common type of malignant melanoma and demonstrates color variegation and irregular borders.  

 

Occurs on sun exposed skin as a large hyperpigmented macule or plaque with irregular borders.

Nodular melanoma   Acral lentiginous melanoma 

 

Most commonly manifests itself as a rapidly growing, often ulcerated or crusted black nodule.  

 

Occurs as macule or hyperpigmented  plaque on the palms and soles. Lateral pigment diffusion is present.
