    Ophthalmology is the diagnosis and treatment of all eye problems, including injuries and medical disorders. These medical disorders may involve the eye alone or the eye in association with other general medical conditions. Ophthalmologists may prescribe spectacles and contact lenses to improve sight and can perform surgery for eye conditions such as cataracts.

    The Ophthalmology Department provides a comprehensive and efficient outpatient and surgical service to the local community and beyond. The multidisciplinary approach to patient care means that the Consultants are supported by a dedicated team of ophthalmic trained nursing staff, orthoptists and opticians all of whom strive to ensure patients receive first class care.

    Many conditions are treated within the department including general ophthalmology, glaucoma, oculoplastic, medical retina with diabetes, lacrimal, paediatric and squint. If surgery is required most conditions are treated under local anaesthetic allowing patients to recuperate in their own home.     The Gynaecology department provides a full range of emergency and elective gynaecology services. The elective services offered include:

    • General gynaecology: including the management of menstrual disturbance, endometriosis and HRT related problems and pelvic organ prolapse.
    • Urogynaecology: Offering a comprehensive range of investigations and management options for the management of female urinary incontinence.
    • Reproductive medicine: Offers investigations, advice and management of infertility problems.
    • Gynaecological oncology: Gynaecological oncology deals with the screening and management of cancer within gynaecology.

    In addition there is a range of emergency facilities with the emergency early pregnancy clinic and urgent referral clinic which operate on a daily basis.

    General Surgeons treat a very wide range of conditions through surgery. The term general surgery embraces a variety of different surgical specialties such as breast surgery, gut and bowel (known as upper gastrointestinal and colorectal) surgery, and vascular surgery.

    A surgical specialty that mainly involves the surgical management of disorders of the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, gall bladder, bile duct, liver and pancreas.

    The Upper GI Department incorporates a joint medical and surgical approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases including cancer. The aim is to provide a patient focused approach to Upper GI diseases.

    We are a highly specialist team, and have excellent radiological and oncological support to complement the service. This enables us to offer patients fast, convenient and compassionate care delivered to a consistently high standard.

    We offer a full range of assessment, treatment and follow up for a wide range of surgical and Upper GI disorders and procedures.

    Gastroenterology


    Gastroenterology is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system, including the stomach, bowels, liver, gall bladder and related organs. These include conditions such as abdominal pain, ulcers, diarrhoea and cancer. Gastroenterologists perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and they consult with surgeons when abdominal operations are required.

    The Gastroenterology department provides a comprehensive investigation and management service of suspected and established gastrointestinal disease. Our patient services are provided on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The diseases dealt with through this service range across the whole of gastroenterology

    The Gastroenterologists provide a highly specialised compassionate service to the local community. A high standard of care is given by all the staff within the department to meet the needs and expectations of our patients. Diagnostic capabilities include colonoscopy, endoscopy and ERCP. An Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic provides specialised ongoing care for patients with this chronic illness.

    Pain Management

    Pain Management is the medical discipline concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of the entire range of painful disorders.

    Because of the vast scope of the field, pain management is often considered a multi-disciplinary sub-specialty. The expertise of several disciplines is brought together in an effort to provide the maximum benefit to each patient. Although the care of patients is heavily influenced by the primary specialty of doctors who specialise further in pain management, each member of the pain treatment team understands the anatomical and physiological basis of pain perception, the psychological factors that modify the experience of pain, and the basic principles of pain management.

    Urology is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, male urinary system, testes, prostate and male reproductive organs.

    The Urology Department offers a comprehensive range of urological services where the staff are committed to providing first class urological care to the local community.

    The department provides a full range of urological services where Patients are managed in a multi-disciplinary setting. The service incorporates both the diagnosis and management of urological conditions through both in-patient and out-patient facilities.

    Patients may be required to undergo some investigations in advance of their first Urology Outpatient Clinic appointment, and for some of our clinics, you will be given information in advance about what is likely to happen. You might also be asked to complete a questionnaire about your symptoms to bring with you to clinic.

    Elderly Care

    Geriatric Medicine deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of illness in older people. The goal of Elderly Care Medicine, working with other members of the health team, is to restore an ill, disabled older person to a level of optimal ability and, wherever possible, return them to an independent life at home. This involves carefully planning the discharge through discussion with the patient and other people involved in their care.

     Services Provided

    The department is dedicated to maintaining and improving the health, independence, and quality of life of older persons and focuses on reducing the burden of dependent persons through learning and discovery.

    This is delivered by a multidisciplinary team working together on the ward or within a clinic setting, which will meet together at least once a week to discuss their patients. The team generally includes doctors, nurses, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietetics, social workers, pharmacy and psychology.
